Now that Congressional Democrats have made it clear they’re going after Donald Trump’s tax returns, you can expect Trump to fight that request all the way to the Supreme Court, which certainly suggests that he’s got something to hide. And considering the way he’s done business over the years, his fears are likely justified.
But what exactly might be hiding in those tax returns that Trump wants to keep top secret? Doesn’t the American public have the right to know if perhaps the head of state had loyalties to other countries or interests that influence policy decisions?
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston has explored the potential bombshells hiding in Trump’s tax documents, and he speculates that there are several explosive secrets the president is hoping no one will ever find out. Here’s three of those:
His net worth is ‘less than zero’
In an article he recently wrote for The Daily Beast, Johnston noted:
“When we see Trump’s tax returns, as we can expect to soon thanks to a 1924 anti-corruption law, you can get bet his income won’t support a net worth anywhere near even one billion dollars. And don’t be surprised if his net worth turns out to be less than zero, as Trump was forced to admit in 1990 when I reported that his net worth was negative $295 million, meaning that you are probably worth more than Donald Trump.”
The Russian mafia connection
“Trump was working with the Russian mafia for more than 30 years. He was profiting from them. They rescued him. They bailed him out. They took him from being $4 billion in debt to becoming a multi-billionaire again, and they fueled his political ambitions, starting more than 30 years ago. This means Trump was in bed with the Kremlin as well, whether he knew it or not.”
He’s a tax cheat
The New York Times uncovered this story late last year:
“President Trump participated in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the fortune he received from his parents.”
It’s very likely there are dozens of other embarrassing and potentially illegal secrets hidden in Trump’s tax returns, and while he’s been able to keep them secret so far, Congress has every right to request the documents and there’s an excellent chance they’ll be able to get them in due time. And when they do, Trump will either be impeached or resign in disgrace. That’s how incriminating Trump’s taxes are.
