GOP Senator Tom Cotton Introduces Legislation To Punish Schools That Teach About Slavery

Proving yet again that Republicans are utterly clueless when it comes to matters of American history and racism, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) introduced a piece of legislation that withhold federal education funds to any schools that dare to teach about how African-Americans were brought to this country in chains and forced to work.

CNN reports that Cotton is specifically targeting public schools that use the recent New York Times series entitled the “1619 Project”:

“A statement from the senator’s office announcing the bill introduction states that the legislation will be titled the Saving American History Act of 2020 and ‘would prohibit the use of federal funds to teach the 1619 Project by K-12 schools or school districts. Schools that teach the 1619 Project would also be ineligible for federal professional-development grants.'”

Cotton even touted his legislation with great pride:

How is learning about the history of this country and of the ugly stain of slavery Marxist propaganda? And if it is, wouldn’t that make any legislation to deny the teaching of it be an attempt to impose intellectual fascism on the educational system, which is supposed to encourage debate instead of preventing it before it ever begins?

Like so many of his colleagues in the GOP, Cotton thinks the issue of slavery is in the past and has no relevance to today’s world. Some Republicans have even suggested that the election of Barack Obama in 2012 proves the United States isn’t racist. If that were true, then George Floyd and so many other black men would still be alive.

Granted, Cotton’s has no chance of passing the full Senate, but his legislation is a slap in the face of legitimate inquiry into the more troubling aspects of American history. And God knows there’s plenty of those to take a closer look at.

Tom Cotton and his ilk need to be voted out of office. They don’t have the sense that God promised a billy goat.
