Ben Carson Claims Gay Rights Aren’t The Same As Civil Rights

Ben Carson simply cannot stop saying stupid and divisive things whenever he’s asked about equal rights for the LGBT community, and once again his remarks have gotten him in hot water.

Appearing on the Fox News show “Special Report,” Carson was asked about comments he made earlier in the year in which he said being gay is a choice, because people:

“Go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay.”

Dr. Carson later apologized for those remarks, but on Wednesday he told Fox News host Bret Baier:

“I was a little bit irritated that he (CNN host Chris Cuomo) was equating the whole [gay marriage] issue with the Civil Rights movement. Because, quite frankly, I didn’t remember any times when there were signs up that says, you know, ‘everybody else here and gay people have to drink at this fountain.’”

That’s certainly true. There are indeed no signs telling LGBT Americans where they can drink or eat. But in many states they cannot marry or receive the same benefits as others do. They may be subjected to discrimination at work, in housing, and they are often more likely to be victims of violence simply because of their sexuality. No one claims that LGBT discrimination is so overt. You would think a man as learned as Dr. Carson, who is a neurosurgeon, would acknowledge these facts. But he’s far too busy trying to cozy up to the far right wing of the GOP.

Carson also took time to pat himself on the back for how his campaign has progressed since his March comments on gay rights, remarking:

“They saw that as the opportunity to finally knock this guy out — and they thought that they had done it. Stick a fork in him, he’s gone. They were jubilant. And now they’re saying, I can’t believe this guy’s still here, are you kidding me?”

Doctor, allow me to make you aware of something you obviously have not figured out yet: You are done. We have put a fork in you a long time ago. You have no chance of winning anything in 2016. You are currently running seventh in most polls of 2016 GOP contenders. If you think that’s impressive, then perhaps you need to apply some of your own medical training to yourself.

Physician, heal thyself.
