Very quietly a couple of weeks ago the House Intelligence Committee, which had been investigating (ad nauseam) the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, issued its report, and since that time the Right Wing conspiracy theorists have suddenly gone silent on the topic. Even Fox News, official propaganda ministry for the Far Right, has dropped the story off of their radar screen. For this alone we can all be thankful, but it’s worth taking a closer look at what the committee said.
Specifically, the Intelligence Committee found that there was no intelligence failure, the Obama administration did not block a rescue attempt by the CIA, and there is no evidence the agency funneled weapons from Libya to the Syrian opposition. In other words, all of the things the Republicans have been braying so loudly about for the past two years were proven to be nothing more than speculation and outright lies from the fevered brains of intellectual supernovas such as Darrell Issa, Michelle Bachmann, and Sarah (I can see Russia from my house) Palin. The only conclusion that in any way criticized the Obama team was a footnote in which the committee asserted the diplomatic compound where Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed was not “well-protected.” However, the committee said not a word about the culpability of the Congress in repeated funding cuts for diplomatic services across the world. No doubt that footnote got misplaced by the printer.
So, now that we have this report, end of story, right? Uh, no. Not even close.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said shortly after the House committee released its report that he is of the firm belief that the Senate should now convene a special committee to further investigate the matter. It will cost millions of dollars and take time away from other urgent matters the Senate should be focusing on, but Graham is too busy running for the GOP nomination in 2016 to be dissuaded from his mission of finding the truth on Benghazi. Which leads one to wonder, Did he actually read the House report? Never mind that. Facts cannot stand in the way of a man who is longing to be President. Gentlemen, to the Idiotmobile!
Make no mistake, all of this investigating, reinvestigating, and sifting through the already concluded matter of Benghazi has one purpose: to smear former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the leading contender for the Democratic Presidential nomination. The GOP knows they cannot beat Hillary Clinton, so they are busy trying to slag her. Sound familiar? It’s the same thing they tried to do with Whitewater during Bill Clinton’s administration and the kind of empty rabbit hole they are so fond of pursuing in any matter concerning President Obama. Yes, it will cost more taxpayer money, will not uncover anything we don’t already know about Benghazi, but politics comes before all else for the Republicans. What conspiracy will they invent when they lose the 2016 election? No doubt they are busy concocting it right now. Stay tuned.
