Attorney General Of D.C. Takes Legal Action Against Trump For Violating Financial Laws

The Attorney General for the District of Columbia has filed suit against the 2016 Trump inaugural committee and Trump Organization for the illegal diversion of funds that were supposed to be used by a nonprofit, alleging that the president and his business steered more than $1 million to book a ballroom at Trump’s D.C. hotel for an inflated price even though it was almost never used.

According to the Associated Press:

“The District of Columbia’s attorney general, Karl Racine, said the committee misused nonprofit funds and coordinated with the hotel’s management and members of the Trump family to arrange the events. He said one of the event’s planners raised concerns about pricing with Trump, the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump and Rick Gates, a top campaign official at the time.”

This is just the latest example of how the Trump Organization and family have used both public and nonprofit funds in order to feather their nests as the president has not completely severed his ties to his company, which is now run by his three eldest children, Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka.

The complaint filed in court Wednesday specifically notes that there was direct contact between the inaugural committee and Trump’s corporation, which is not allowed under existing statutes in the District of Columbia, the Washington Post reports:

“Documents submitted with the 18-page complaint show discussions between Trump’s company and his inaugural committee, ending in a deal that Racine argues is such a waste of the committee’s funds that it violates the law and the organization’s mission ‘to further the common good and welfare; of American citizens ‘by supporting the activities surrounding the 2017 Presidential inauguration.’

“Hotel management emailed the committee in November 2016 saying an eight-day package of meeting rooms, food and drinks would cost $3.6 million — an enormous number even by the standards of luxury hotels during the inauguration.”

Other investigations are also underway into the questionable dealings of the Trump inaugural committee and Trump properties. Authorities in both New York and New Jersey are looking into possible financial crimes related to the 2016 inauguration and the possibility that foreigners contributed to the inaugural fund, which is a violation of state and federal law.

As we’ve repeatedly seen since Donald Trump took office, his primary focus is not the national security or well-being of the United States. Instead, he’s just looking for ways to enrich himself at the expense of American taxpayers. Once a grifter, always a grifter.
