The investigation of Rudy Giuliani and the ongoing Ukraine scandal continues to expand, with Politico noting a couple of months ago that prosecutors had brought more resources to the case:

“The scrutiny isn’t coming just from the previously known probes by FBI agents and the U.S. attorney’s office based out of Manhattan, according to two people familiar with the investigation. The criminal division of the Justice Department in Washington has taken an interest in the former New York mayor, too, meaning an expansion of resources that indicates the politically sensitive probe into the president’s personal attorney is both broader and moving at a faster pace than previously understood.”

Given those facts, it’s time to consider what exactly Giuliani may be charged with, according to former federal prosecutors Barbara McQuade and Joyce Vance, both of whom you’ve likely seen on MSNBC.

In a sort of “thought experiment” they did for Just Security, McQuade and Vance drew up a mock indictment of Giuliani, and here are the three charges they say the former New York City mayor could be facing based on the evidence now in the public record:

Conspiracy to Defraud the United States: This charge includes “knowingly and intentionally conspired to defraud the United States by impairing, obstructing, and defeating the lawful functions of the Federal Election Commission in administering federal requirements that prohibit soliciting, accepting or receiving a thing of value from a foreign national in connection with a federal election.”

Conspiracy to Commit Bribery: “Corruptly seek a thing of value, that is, an agreement by the government of Ukraine to publicly announce that it was investigating certain matters that were favorable to Individual-1’s (Donald Trump) political campaign, in return for being influenced in the performance of an official act, that is, releasing to Ukraine military aid that had been approved by Congress.”

Contempt of Congress: (Giuliani) “having been summoned by the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence of the United States House of Representatives, the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the Committee on Oversight and Reform to produce documents pertaining to an impeachment inquiry, willfully made default, in violation of Title 2, United States Code, Section 192.”

There are other charges that may be in the offing, too, if the evidence supports them. Those include:

• Money Laundering
• Campaign Finance Violations
• Tax Charges

Not long ago, Giuliani proudly declared he hadn’t hired a an attorney because “I don’t need one.”

Since then, we’ve learned that Rudy is indeed in the market for a good lawyer. And based on the charges he’s facing, he’d better get the best one that money can buy.
