The U.S Department of Justice (DOJ) under Attorney General William Barr is in complete free fall, and things may be about to get much worse for the AG and President Donald Trump after the abrupt resignation of the former U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., who oversaw the prosecution of Trump protege Roger Stone.

NBC News reports that Jessie Liu tendered her resignation just a day after the White House withdrew her nomination to serve in a senior Treasury Department post:

“Liu had headed the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, D.C., which oversaw several cases that originated with former special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including prosecutions of longtime Trump associate Stone and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

“Liu was moved from the U.S. attorney’s office after Trump nominated her to serve as the Treasury Department’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial crimes, a top position overseeing economic sanctions.”

It should be noted that Liu had suggested she stay in her post with the DOJ until she was confirmed by the Senate for the Treasury job, but was talked out of that by the attorney general:

“After Liu was nominated, she told the lawyers in her office that she would stay put until she was confirmed. However, Attorney General William Barr asked her to leave around Feb. 1 to ensure continuity in the office, and she agreed.”

Since we know Trump had already expressed concern that Stone — who was found guilty on charges of obstruction, making false statements, and witness tampering in November of 2019 — was treated unfarily, that raises the possibility Barr set Liu up to take the fall for the Stone prosecution and stabbed her in the back, knowing her nomination to Treasury was going to be pulled, leaving her without a job at Justice, too.

But there’s a much larger problem for Barr and the president: Liu is now free to testify before Congress and tell everything she knows about what’s happening at the DOJ. Since she’ll likely be subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee, Liu has plenty of incentive to blow the whistle on exactly how corrupt both Barr and Trump are.

Granted, testimony alone won’t rid us of the attorney general or his boss in the Oval Office. But it will give voters yet another example of how out of control this administration is and how politicized the DOJ under Barr has become.

It’s too soon to know for sure, but at the moment it appears that William Barr has screwed over the wrong person. And now she can get some big time payback on her former boss.
