In recent weeks, the City of New Orleans has been in the process of removing all monuments to those who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War, including statutes of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and military commander Robert E. Lee. These efforts have been met with consternation and anger by some people who seem to forget that the South lost the war, a war which was fought over the issue of slavery.

Now we have a Mississippi state legislator saying that anyone who takes down a Confederate memorial should be executed by lynching.

Karl Oliver (R), posted this on his Facebook page Saturday:

Also, two other GOP lawmakers in Mississippi–Reps. John Reed and Doug McLeod–“liked” Oliver’s post.

Mississippi State Rep. Chris Bell (D-Jackson), said the comments from Oliver are disrespectful to the entire state:

“Angered beyond words by the inflammatory remarks made by the Representative from District 46. His constant and consistent disrespect for those who are offended by the images of hate is unacceptable! I will fight with vigor and tenacity to ensure not only our current state flag is removed along with those images that glorify hate.”

Having been born and raised in a state located in the heart of the Deep South (Georgia), and since I live in one of the greatest cities in the world, Atlanta, allow me to take a moment and address Mr. Oliver and those who choose to support him or his ignorant ideas.

First of all, when a war takes place and one side defeats the other, the losing side must then fly the flag of the winners. So Confederate flags indicate total historical ignorance on the part of the person flying them.

Also, it should be noted that those who cling to symbols of the Old South and our history of racism may try to cloak their words and actions under the banner of “heritage,” but that’s just another way of saying you wish things could be the way they were when one race of people owned another.

Lastly, if these moronic hicks want to hold onto the past and pretend like it’s the 1860s instead of 2017, then how about they surrender their American currency and go back to using Confederate money to pay their bills.

Oh, and one last thing for Mr. Oliver: You disgust me. Do the world a favor and STFU!
