If there’s one thing you can count on in the world of politics, it’s that the GOP and the NRA will always be the best of buddies. Hell, they might as well be happily married to each other. The GOP refuses to pass any sensible gun control legislation and the NRA funnels millions of dollars in campaign contributions to Republicans. It’s a mutually beneficial love affair that has existed for decades.

Should anyone need proof that the GOP and NRA are joined at the hip, consider how both reacted when President Obama issued several sensible gun control executive orders late last year. Here’s a news report on those orders and the pro-gun gloom and doom that followed:

Now we have Republicans in the Washington state legislature pushing a pro gun bill they have named “the Washington state firearms civil rights act.” The name alone should serve as a warning sign, but the GOP state legislator who introduced the bill, Matt Shea, also decided to include pro-gun quotes from some of the Founding Fathers. One problem with that strategy: He made up the quotes.

Let’s take a look at some of the quotes Shea placed in his legislation. Here’s one he attributes to George Washington:

“Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty, teeth, and keystone under independence.”

Wow, I had no idea George was so rabidly in favor of guns. Probably because, according to researchers at the Washington estate:

“This quotation does not show up in any of Washington’s writings, nor does any closely related quote.”

So there’s instance number one of total bullshit. Here’s the second one, which Shea said came from Thomas Jefferson:

“Those who hammer their guns into plowshares will plow for those who do not.”

Nope. No record of Jefferson saying or writing that one. Lastly, let’s take a look at a quote that Shea claims came from Alexander Hamilton and can be found in “The Federalist Papers.”

“The best we can help for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.”

You guessed it: That one is not in anything written by Hamilton.

Clearly, when Republicans want to defend their sugar daddies in the NRA, they will go to any lengths to do so. They will lie, cheat, steal, defend weapons of mass murder, turn the other way as children are gunned down, because they are getting millions to do so.

That’s best defined as a deal with the devil. And no, I’m not claiming Ben Franklin said that.
