While Mike Pence may try to pretend he played absolutely no role in the Russiagate scandal which is on the verge of consuming the White House, recent actions he’s taken would seem to suggest that he’s deeply enmeshed in the matter.
You probably recall Pence has repeatedly sworn that even though he was head of the Trump transition team, he didn’t know disgraced former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was acting as a foreign agent when he approved him to join the administration. If that’s true, then why is Pence currently raising money for his political action committee (PAC) which he plans to use to help pay his legal expenses?
Friday evening, the Vice President attended a fundraising dinner for his PAC Great America Committee, in Indianapolis. Tickets to the even ranged from $2,500 to $5,000. Later, a source close to the Pence team told the Wall Street Journal that the VP would probably use money raised at the event to pay his legal bills.
What legal bills? Well, just this week Pence hired Richard Cullen, a Richmond-based attorney who once served as a U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to serve as his lawyer in the Russia probe being conducted by both the FBI and Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Financial disclosures Pence filed in 2016 show that the Vice President is virtually broke, owning no mutual funds, no 401(K) retirement accounts, and have no large amounts of money in savings accounts. But since Pence now has his Great America PAC, he can raise unlimited sums of money for almost anything he wishes, including his legal expenses. Also, any donor can help bankroll Pence’s legal bills, including the president himself.
And so we see yet another example of how completely corrupt the Trump administration is. None of them have done anything the least bit illegal, they love to claim, but then they lawyer up and try to get others to pay the bills. It’s disingenuous and downright disgusting.
