Impeachment Committee Investigating Foreign Governments Using ‘Raw Bribery’ To Influence Trump

The latest high crime and misdemeanor that may soon be added to the growing list being investigated by the House impeachment committee now includes bribery, according to a report from Politico:

“House investigators are looking into an allegation that groups — including at least one foreign government — tried to ingratiate themselves to President Donald Trump by booking rooms at his hotels but never staying in them.

“It’s a previously unreported part of a broad examination by the House Oversight Committee, included in Democrats’ impeachment inquiry, into whether Trump broke the law by accepting money from U.S. or foreign governments at his properties.”

Not only would that be bribery, it’s also in direct violation of the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution, which states:

“No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”

A foreign government booking rooms at a Trump hotel is clearly a violation of that clause, as House Oversight Committee member Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) remarked in much starker terms:

“Now we’re looking at near raw bribery. That was the risk from Day One: foreign governments and others trying to seek favor because we know Trump pays attention to this. … It’s an obvious attempt to curry favor with him.”

All of this is part of a larger case the impeachment inquiry is trying to make in regard to Trump, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) noted:

“The unifying theme of congressional investigations is examining the president’s abuse of his office and his power to advance his personal political agenda and his goal of financial self-enrichment.”

With Trump also signaling that he will refuse to cooperate with House committees investigating his actions since taking office, a charge of obstruction is also on the table, along with others such as interfering in the 2020 election by seeking dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden from the government of Ukraine.

Each day, a new crime is uncovered that can be added to the list of impeachable offenses. At this rate, there may well be dozens of charges when formal articles of impeachment are drafted by the impeachment inquiry.

To put it mildly, Donald Trump is in a world of hurt.
