Here we go again.
President Trump, who walks around in a state of perpetual inadequacy, once again addressed the fact that while he won the 2016 election, he hasn’t gotten over the fact that Hillary Clinton garnered nearly 3 million more votes than he did.
At a rally for incumbent GOP Senator Luther Strange in Alabama Friday evening, Trump commented:
“I would rather have the popular vote count because for me, it would be easier.”
If it was so damn easy, why didn’t he manage to pull it off? Did he forget to tell the Russians he wanted to win both the electoral and popular vote?
The terminally juvenile Trump then went on to say:
“I’ve never really been in favor of it [the Electoral College], but now I appreciate it.
“To me, winning the popular vote is easier, because you go to New York, you go to California, you go to Texas.”
Trump went to those three states, and he lost two of them–California and New York–by gigantic margins:
- In California, Clinton received 8,753,788 votes to Trump’s 4,483,810.
- In New York, which is Trump’s home state, Clinton racked up 4,556,124 votes to Trump’s 2,819,534.
But Trump wasn’t done dispensing his bizarre logic when it came to the 2016 election, adding:
“The beauty with the electoral college is … I was going to all over, I was going to smaller states. It brings the whole country into play. It brings certain states into play that would never really be thought of. But I focused heavily on Pennsylvania and North Carolina.”
Pennsylvania and North Carolina, huh? So are those the ones that the Trump campaign told Russian hackers to focus their efforts on? And did he get what he wanted? Well, Trump won both of those states and we now know that Russia did indeed attempt to compromise voting systems in 21 states as part of their attack on our democracy.
But here’s what all of Trump’s talk about the popular vote is really about: He still hasn’t gotten over the fact that he lost by a gigantic margin to, of all people, a woman. He feels like an illegitimate head of state. And when Robert Mueller is finished with his investigation, he may also be an indicted and impeached head of state.
