Though you can probably expect him to whine that it’s “fake news,” we now know that President Trump had a second meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin during the G-20 summit last week in Hamburg.
Political scientist Ian Bremmer said on the Charlie Rose Show that the second meeting, which was informal, took place on the sidelines of the summit. Bremmer added:
“We clearly know that Trump does not care what the media has to say about his desire to have a close, personal relationship with the Russian president, and what drives it.”
Adding to the strangeness of the attraction between Trump and Putin, Bremmer noted, is the fact that the American president seems to have a bizarre need to please Putin:
“Never in my life as a political scientist have I seen two countries with a constellation of national interests that are as dissident, while the two leader seem to be doing everything possible to make nice. That’s what people don’t understand.”
Bremmer also commented that Trump’s desire to pal around with Putin, who has been accused of murdering women, children, journalists, and his political opponents, leaves him “flummoxed.”
However, as the renowned political scientist told Rose:
“The one policy that Trump has been remarkably consistent on is Russia.”
Is that, as some have speculated, because Putin has incriminating information on Trump? Does Trump owe large sums of money to Russian entities that also have connections to Putin, who is speculated to be worth at least $200 billion? Or might the Russians have more embarrassing information in the form of photographs or videos of Trump engaged in some sexual activity that could destroy him if released?
Whatever the fascination Trump does have for Putin, it could wind up costing him the presidency.
