Lobbyist Confirms: AG Jeff Sessions Committed Perjury In Testimony Before Senate Committee

On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions swore under oath that he didn’t have any contacts with lobbyists working for Russian interests while he was a part of the 2016 Trump for President campaign.

But based on a report from the Guardian, it now appears that Sessions committed perjury.

Richard Burt, who served as ambassador to Germany during the Reagan administration and has worked as a lobbyist for a pipeline company controlled by the Russian state-owned energy conglomerate Gazprom, says he attended two dinners which were organized by then-Senator Sessions at the height of the 2016 presidential campaign. Burt told the Guardian:

“I did attend two dinners with groups of former Republican foreign policy officials and Senator Sessions.”

In addition, Burt also appears to have had considerable input into a foreign policy speech Trump delivered at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. while running for the White House. This is notable because the Mayflower is where intelligence officials have said Sessions had a third undisclosed meeting with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Politico reported last October that Burt had attended dinners hosted by Sessions, but the matter didn’t come into focus until this week when Sessions told the intelligence committee he couldn’t recall meeting with lobbyists with connections to Russia or Russian businesses.

Since we now know that President Trump is under investigation by the special counsel for obstruction of justice, can it be long before Robert Mueller also opens a formal probe of criminal perjury by the attorney general? Clearly, Sessions doesn’t just need to recuse himself from matters related to Russiagate being investigated by the FBI. He has lied under oath and should immediately resign.
