Manhattan DA Preparing To Charge Trump Family With Crimes Related To Their Business Dealings

The public impeachment hearings over the past few weeks have been damaging to Donald Trump and key members of his administration, and the president has been lashing out impotently on Twitter, suggesting that everyone is out to get him and Congressional Democrats are engaged in a “witch hunt,” much the same as he did during the Russia investigation conducted by Robert Mueller.

Now, however, news from Trump’s home state of New York makes it clear that while the president is facing the humiliation of impeachment, he, his family, and his company are on the line legally, and it appears that indictments are about to be handed down from a grand jury in Manhattan.

ProPublica reports Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is closing in on the Trump Organization:

“Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.’s criminal investigation of the Trump Organization is scrutinizing the actions of one of the president’s oldest and most trusted deputies, ProPublica has learned.

“The focus on Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg, a 72-year-old accountant now running the business with Trump’s two adult sons, stems from his involvement in arranging a payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump (which Trump has denied).

“Vance’s state grand jury is examining whether Weisselberg, among others — and even the Trump Organization — should face state criminal charges for falsification of business records.”

Weisselberg has also cooperated with prosecutors in the Southern District of New York, but it seems unlikely any federal charges will be brought against Trump while William Barr is serving as U.S. Attorney General.

The ProPublica report also notes that while Trump and his sons Don Jr. and Eric haven’t yet been indicted, that possibility has not been ruled out by the Manhattan DA.

Vance has also been in contact with Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, who is serving a three-year sentence. Cohen is said to be cooperating fully with Vance’s office.

The important part of the report is that Vance has a grand jury convened and looking at evidence. That alone means that he expects to issue criminal indictments in the case.

As we’ve seen many times already, just when Trump thinks things cannot possibly get any worse for him, they do. And if indictments are handed down against him, his family, and his company before the 2020 election, that alone could doom his already slim chances of being reelected.
