Mitch ‘The Turtle’ McConnell Declares: GOP Will Drop Trump ‘Like A Hot Rock’ If He Wins Nomination

The Republican Party is now facing their nightmare scenario for November: Donald Trump gets the nomination and loses badly–perhaps in historic fashion–to the Democratic nominee.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is now reportedly telling 2016 GOP Senate candidates to keep their distance from Trump and even encouraging them to run attack ads against the real estate mogul, according to the New York Times.

McConnell is also reported to have told GOP Senate candidates that even though Bill Clinton was reelected by a huge margin in 1996, he still won reelection to his Kentucky Senate seat, even going so far as to suggest that the GOP will drop Trump “like a hot rock” should he manage to win the Republican nomination.

The Senate Majority Leader and other top Republicans are apparently terrified that they could easily lose control of the Senate if Trump is heading the GOP ticket. Considering that they must defend more Senate seats than their Democratic counterparts, that is certainly a valid fear.

According to some who attended a private presentation hosted by the conservative billionaires Charles G. and David H. Koch,  Trump’s record and platform was deemed “utterly unacceptable,” and that has led to high-profile donors holding back on donations out of fear their contributions will be wasted.

How might the GOP keep Trump from the nomination should it come to a brokered convention? Former Gov. Michael O. Leavitt of Utah remarked:

“There is no mechanism. There is no smoke-filled room. If there is, I’ve never seen it, nor do I know anyone who has. This is going to play out in the way that it will.”

And it could well mean that McConnell has one of the shortest tenures as Majority Leader in history.

  1. I’ve heard rumors that some high ranking GOP leaders are talking about supporting Hillary to stop Trump… this wouldn’t surprise me… the GOP has painted itself into a nasty corner……..
