While most of the heat and light surrounding the multiple federal and state investigations into members of the Trump family has been focused on President Trump, Don Jr., and Jared Kushner, it now appears that Ivanka Trump is also neck-deep in a scandal which began to unfold late last year.
“The inauguration paid the Trump Organization for rooms, meals and event space at the company’s Washington hotel.
“During the planning, Ivanka Trump, the president-elect’s eldest daughter and a senior executive with the Trump Organization, was involved in negotiating the price the hotel charged the 58th Presidential Inaugural Committee for venue rentals.”
Not only did Ivanka set the price for hotel rooms, she later got called out by a member of the inaugural committee who thought the cost was excessive:
“A top inaugural planner emailed Ivanka and others at the company to ‘express my concern’ that the hotel was overcharging for its event spaces, worrying of what would happen ‘when this is audited.'”
If indeed the Trump hotel charged more than the going rate, that would be in direct violation of tax law, not to mention the ethical questions raised by such an arrangement with Ivanka deciding how much the inaugural committee paid for rooms and other venues. As Marcus Owens, former head of the IRS division that oversees non-profits such as the inaugural committee noted:
“The fact that the inaugural committee did business with the Trump Organization raises huge ethical questions about the potential for undue enrichment.”
Prosecutors in New York have opened a criminal investigation into whether or not the inaugural committee improperly spent funds and where money raised by the committee came from, including straw donors who allegedly funneled money from Saudi Arabia and the UAE into the inaugural fund in exchange for political favors from the Trump administration.
Officials with the New York Attorney General’s office, along with New Jersey and Washington, D.C., are said to be working on charges against Ivanka. And remember, her daddy has zero pardon power in state cases.
The Trump family, it should be clear by now, is first and foremost a criminal enterprise.
