Open Mouth, Insert Foot

Just in time for the Holidays, yet another Republican has spouted off something so hateful and vile that she had to retract it less than a day later. Only this time, the cheap shot wasn’t directed at President Obama.  No, this mental midget decided to go after Sasha and Malia Obama, the President’s teenage daughters.  Just when you think the GOP cannot stoop any lower, they do exactly that.

Elizabeth Lauten, who is listed as the communications director for U.S. Representative Stephen Fincher (R-TN), posted on her personal Facebook page the following hate-filled screed aimed directly at the Obama daughters:

“Dear Sasha and Malia, I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re part of the First Family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play. Then again your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so I’m guessing you’re coming up a little short in the “good role model” department. Nevertheless, stretch yourself. Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar. And certainly don’t make faces during televised, public events.”

What prompted Lauten’s bilious online rant?  Well, she said she had watched the reaction of the Obama girls at a speech given by the President and also when the White House Christmas tree was delivered and found the “bored” expressions on the girl’s faces to be unacceptable.  Because, as we all know, teenagers are never bored, and even if they are, they always manage to pretend they aren’t.  However, read the post again and note how Lauten uses the Obama daughters as props so she can get her cheap shot in at the President and First Lady: “Then again your mother and father don’t respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter.”  Sure, if the parents are fair game, then the kids must be, too, right?  But Ms. Lauten found out differently when her post went viral and a flood of comments ricocheted back in her face.  She quickly deleted her original post and replaced it with this self-serving piece of tripe:

“When I first posted on Facebook I reacted to an article and I quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager. After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were. Please know, those judgmental feelings truly have no place in my heart. Furthermore, I’d like to apologize to all of those who I have hurt and offended with my words, and I pledge to learn and grow (and I assure you I have) from this experience.”

So, who can we say is lacking class and respect, not to mention even a shred of common decency?  I wonder if Ms. Lauten has looked in the mirror lately.  Had she, she would clearly be seeing a woman who, in her desperate attempt to attack the President, instead wound up slagging two bright, classy young ladies who have more dignity in their little fingers than Lauten will ever possess in her entire  body.  But this is typical of Republicans.  They continually issue personal attacks on anyone who dares to disagree with them.  I am of the same mindset as former President Bill Clinton, who believed that if someone hurls a barb at you, you should fire back with ten in response. Payback is hell, Ms. Lauten, and you should have enough dignity to resign your post immediately.  No doubt you won’t, because deep in your heart you aren’t sorry for what you said, just that you got caught saying it.  This is the very definition of disgusting, which the GOP has long excelled in the art of.  Just chalk this up to more of the same. And there will be more to follow, I assure you.
