Right-Wing Allies Warning Trump Not To Compromise On Immigration

Hardline members of the GOP who supported Donald Trump in large part due to his restrictive stance on the issue of immigration are now warning the President-elect: Don’t even think of reaching a compromise with Democrats or moderate Republicans when it comes to your signature policy.

Dan Stein, the president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), was very clear in what he expects from Trump when he takes the Oval Office on January 20:

“This was, along with trade, the issue that allowed Donald Trump to mow down 16 other viable and talented and capable contenders in the primary process.

“Nobody can bring out, in rally after rally, Americans who lost loved ones because these immigration laws were not enforced…or Americans who lost jobs because of unfair labor displacement (and not follow through.)”

One of the Republicans feeling the heat on the issue of immigration is Texas Congressman Michael McCaul, who has been mentioned as a candidate to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Many on the far right think McCaul is far too weak on the issue of immigration and would support amnesty for the undocumented. Breitbart recently published an article which called McCaul an ally of:

“Discredited globalist and rejected House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.”

McCaul spokeswoman Lizzie Litzow pushed back on the Breitbart article, commenting:

“He stands staunchly against any form of amnesty. What he did do at the time [2014] was express support for the idea of immediately securing our border.”

The dream pick to lead Homeland Security for the hard right is Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state who has achieved national fame for not being willing to give an inch on the issue of immigration. But could Kobach make it through what would likely be a contentious confirmation hearing? And would his own hardline position pass muster in federal court?

As of now, those who want no compromise whatsoever are not willing to bargain on anything related to immigration. They want a wall and the mass deportation of millions, including children. If they get their way, what consequences would such a policy have for the United States?

But the most important question of all is this one: How heartless is Trump willing to be when it comes to the lives of millions of families who are already residing here? Time will tell.
