Sam Brownback Says Abortion Restrictions Part Of ‘Pro-Economic Growth Agenda’ In Kansas

We’ve basically come to expect incredibly outrageous and even semi-incoherent pronouncements from Kansas Governor Sam Brownback over the years, but this time he’s really outdone himself.

Just this past weekend, Brownback attempted to spin a restrictive anti-choice piece of legislation currently working its way through the Kansas legislature by saying it’s part of his plan for future economic growth in the Jayhawk State. The bill he was referring to would ban all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Brownback was positively beaming as he proudly announced:

“What we want Kansas to be is the best place in America to do two things: raise a family, grow a small business. And we are moving that way…I’ve signed 10 pro-life bills, there’s another one moving through the legislature on ending dismemberment abortions, where you actually dismember the child to abort it. It’s passed the state Senate, it’s going to pass the House, and I’m going to sign it.”

I’m not sure how forcing women to have unwanted children is beneficial to the Kansas economy, especially when you consider that children don’t pay taxes. But who am I to argue with a intellectual giant like Sam Brownback?

Brownback then suggested that his plans to ban a woman’s right to choose just makes good sense:

“Frankly, one of the big problems we have in the country is we’re not forming enough families. And that is hurting our economic work and hurting our economic projection because the best place for that child is within a strong family. And if you’re not forming a family unit, you are also slowing your economic performance.”

No doubt the Governor will soon be winning a Nobel Prize in Economics with that sterling fiscal growth plan. Why is it that Republicans are constantly decrying what they call “social engineering” in Washington, yet they are the first ones to stick their unwanted noses into the very private decisions of women and women’s reproductive rights?

Keep in mind that since Brownback and his GOP minions have taken control of Kansas, the state’s economy has tanked due in large part to the trickle-down policies they have instituted. So now they figure they can change the subject and impose their will on women.

Sam Brownback doesn’t know the first thing about how to produce economic growth in his state, but he’s obviously a master when it comes to taking away the rights of half the population in Kansas.
