With the 2018 midterm election less than a year away, there are several warnings signs on the horizon for Republicans and the White House:
- Trump’s poll numbers are historically low.
- Generic ballot polls show Democrats with a lead of at least 17 points over the GOP.
- The tax scam recently passed by the GOP and Trump has an extremely high negative rating
- Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Trump and the 2016 election continues to draw closer to the White House and president.
Things are looking so bad for Trump and the GOP that top aides are now warning the president that if indeed Democrats take control of Congress in 2018, he can expect to be impeached. The Washington Post reports:
“In recent weeks, the president has heard from a growing number of outside advisers, confidants, and members of Congress, warning that the White House is poorly positioned to handle the tough 2018 political landscape.
“This week in Palm Beach, Trump has been minimally staffed, especially around Christmas — a period during which he called outside friends and advisers, receiving another round of warnings about the upcoming political cycle. The president has been informed by aides and friends that if he loses the House in 2018, not only would Democrats almost certainly begin impeachment proceedings against him but his entire legislative agenda would be imperiled, making any 2020 reelection bid far more challenging.”
While Trump continues to play golf at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Chief of Staff John Kelly is reportedly looking to shake up the top staff at the White House yet again. But despite whatever moves Kelly may make, the one person he cannot replace is Trump himself, who remains the same loose cannon he’s always been.
If Democrats do take control of Congress in 2018, Trump will indeed be impeached, and, more importantly, he should be. From violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution to his unhinged comments and his campaign’s repeated contacts with Russian operatives, the man is a security threat to the United States.
