On Saturday, Donald Trump held a rally in Melbourne, Florida, apparently unaware that he won the election (kinda sorta) and he doesn’t have to run for reelection for another four years. And at that rally, thousands of avid Trump supporters–aka Trumpkins–showed up to prove their loyalty and dedication to their demigod.
The Washington Post interviewed some of those Trump acolytes, and the most common complaint that came from many of them was the size and strength of the resistance to the wannabe Mussolini. One woman commented:
“They’re stonewalling everything that he’s doing because they’re just being babies about it. All the loudmouths? They need to let it go. Let it go. Shut their mouths and let the man do what he’s got to do. We all shut our mouths when Obama got in the second time around, okay? So that’s what really needs to be done.”
One wonders if the woman who made that remark is truly as ignorant of recent history (remember the Tea Party, lady?) as she sounds, or is just willfully ignorant. Did Donald Trump shut his mouth when President Obama won a second term in office? No, he continued to carp about wanting to see his birth certificate.
Another attendee named Tony Lopez said he agreed with the things Trump had said about the press:
“It was hilarious to see him give it to the media. The media’s problem is that they keep wanting to make up stories so that he looks bad. It doesn’t work. He’s talking right through you guys.”
Perhaps he is to his 39 percent base of support, Mr. Lopez, but not all of us are as gullible as the average Trumpkin.
A Post reporter asked a woman if she thought the country could ever be united with a divisive figure like Trump in the White House. Her reply was as chilling as it was naive:
“I hope so. I don’t know. I don’t know. It would be nice, and I think if — I don’t know, I don’t know. I think the only thing that’s going to reunite us is maybe the Lord coming back.”
If he does come back, something tells me he won’t be happy with the things Donald Trump is saying and doing to others.
