Over the years, Donald Trump has repeatedly said he was about to release his tax returns. For example:

2011

“Maybe I’m going to do the tax returns when Obama does his birth certificate.

“I may tie my tax returns, I’d love to give my tax returns, I may tie my tax returns into Obama’s birth certificate.”

President Obama released his birth certificate, but Trump never coughed up his tax documents.

2014

“If I decide to run for office, I’ll produce my tax returns, absolutely. And I would love to do that.”

He didn’t love it enough to actually do it.

2015

 “I’m thinking about maybe when we find out the true story on Hillary’s email. At some point, I’ll release it.”

Nope. He never did.

2016

In January, Trump again said his campaign was “working on” releasing his tax returns. But apparently he was far too busy cutting deals with Russia to guarantee he won the election to actually do so.

2017

“Well, I’m not releasing the tax returns because as you know, they’re under audit.”

Did Trump provide any evidence he was actually under audit as he claimed? He did not.

Also, a person under audit is free to release his or her tax records, according to the IRS.

So, during Thursday’s press briefing, NBC’s Hallie Jackson asked Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders:

“You said, on Tuesday, that as long as [President Trump’s] taxes are under audit, he’s not going to release them; his 2016 taxes–to our knowledge–are not under audit–unless they are.”

Sanders replied:

“The president’s taxes, no matter who the president is, actually immediately go under audit after being filed.”

Bullshit alert!

As the Law & Crime website notes:

“Nothing is stopping Trump from releasing his taxes–and to be clear, those returns will be under audit at least until he leaves the White House. But now, Sarah Huckabee Sanders has indicated that the president intends on using a perpetual, legalistic excuse not to release them.”

Why might Trump be so reluctant to show us his taxes? Here are a few theories:

• He’s worth much less than he brags he is.
• He has connections to Russian oligarchs and members of the mafia.
• He owes money to shady figures.

Whatever the reason or reasons, Trump continues to lie about his taxes. Yet another reason he needs to be booted from office.
