On Monday, President Trump decided it would be fun to use the name “Pocahontas” for Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) during a White House ceremony for Navajo code talkers who were instrumental in the American effort in World War II.
Asked about Trump’s racist, derogatory remarks at the daily press briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders doubled down on the attack, and that led CNN host Don Lemon to ask:
“How can Sarah Sanders stand there at the podium and say, ‘Oh it’s not a slur, the president doesn’t mean it as a slur.’”
Republican strategist Rick Wilson responded:
“Don, the reason she does that is because her job is contingent on her being a serial, congenital liar in defense of Donald Trump’s latest outrages. She probably has some tiny, shriveled husk left in her soul where she realizes this is the wrong thing to do, but she does it anyway because otherwise they’ll replace her.”
Trump defender Mike Shields tried to excuse what had transpired, saying that every press secretary advocates on the president’s behalf, but Wilson quickly shot Shields down:
“Few presidents go out and sling racial overt code words like that. Few presidents go out and crap on the dignity and legacy of people like these code talkers, these heroic veterans, and then send their press secretary out to answer questions in a way that isn’t saying, ‘Wow, the president regrets what he said today, he truly wishes he had not said that.’”
Wilson then let Trump and Sanders have it with both barrels, adding:
“Instead she goes out and tries to bury people in an avalanche of horseshit every day, because this is her job. I get that’s her job. The White House press secretary has to defend the indefensible. In very few other cases in our modern history, has the press secretary had to go out and defend someone who is slinging stuff that is demonstrably racially charged.”
Rick Wilson is 100 percent correct. Trump and his flunkies are engaging in the worst kind of divisive language and behavior imaginable. They attack people of color, women, and their political opponents with lies, insults, and venom. They are a clear and present danger to the health and well-being of the United States.
