Even though National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was forced to resign in disgrace after it was revealed that he had spoken with the Russian ambassador to the United States before Donald Trump even took office, administration officials are trying to act as if it’s no big deal. Nothing to see here, they seem to be saying. Lets just move on and pretend nothing happened.
Witness senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway when she appeared on the Today show Tuesday morning. On Monday, Conway had proclaimed that Flynn had the full confidence of the so-called president. Yet a few hours later, Flynn had fallen on his sword. She told host Matt Lauer that what led to Flynn’s resignation was that he had misled illegitimate Vice President Mike Pence:
“I think misleading the vice president really was the key here. I spoke with the president this morning, and he asked me to speak on his behalf, and to reiterate that Mike Flynn had resigned. He decided that this situation had become unsustainable for him.”
Lauer could smell the BS from a mile away and reminded Conway:
“You’re saying that was the straw that broke the camel’s back, but the White House knew about that last month when the Justice Department warned the White House that…Gen. Flynn had not been completely honest in characterizing that conversation with the Russian ambassador.”
But Conway merely repeated her assertion that Flynn had indeed had the full confidence of Trump until Monday night when “obviously the situation had become unsustainable.”
Tired of her attempt to force alternative facts on him, Lauer shut Conway down by telling her:
“Kellyanne, that makes no sense! Last month, the Justice Department warned the White House that Gen. Flynn had misled them!”
The dominoes are starting to fall, and there is more to this story than just Flynn. We need to know who else has been compromised and sold out to the Russians. And if that corruption reaches into the Oval Office, it must be rooted out and those involved removed from office and prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law.
