Arizona GOP Legislator: Church Attendance Should Be Mandatory

Why is it that people who call themselves religious seem to have a deep-seated need to force their beliefs upon others, even going so far as to call for mandating church attendance? Is it insecurity, indifference to others, or just plain old inanity?

The latest culprit is a woman named Sylvia Allen. Ms. Allen, God bless her, is an Arizona State Senator and Tea Party favorite (need I say more?), who once declared that the earth is only 6,000 years old. But now she’s decided it’s time to make it a law for everyone in Arizona to attend church by edict of the government.

During a committee discussion on whether or not to allow citizens to carry guns in public facilities, Ms. Allen decided to go full wacko bird when she said:

“Probably we should be debating a bill requiring every American to attend a church of their choice on Sunday to see if we can get back to having a moral rebirth. I believe what’s happening to our country is that there’s a moral erosion of the soul of America.”

Not to mention the continual dumbing down of our elected officials nationwide. When she was asked about her statements later by the press, Allen didn’t back away from her words. No, she just dug the hole deeper and dove into it. In the 1950s, she recalled wistfully:

“People prayed, people went to church. I remember on Sundays the stores were closed. The biggest thing is religion was kicked out of our public places, out of our schools.”

Ah yes, nostalgia for the Fifties. When blacks couldn’t vote, women had virtually no rights, children were the property of their parents, and Ike kept us all safe under the comfort of a nuclear umbrella. Think about it long enough and it’s bound to bring tears of joy to your eyes. I’m quite sure it brings them to Sylvia Allen’s myopic view of the world.

How I wish people like Ms. Allen could one day understand just how ridiculous, narrow-minded, and empty-headed they sound when the long for the good old days. But as the old saying goes, that’s like asking a bear not to crap in the woods.

  1. If New Mexico advertises itself as the Land of Enchantment; then Arizona HAS to be the Land of the Delusional.

  2. Mandatory church attendance would be a deal breaker for me. That is an employee’s free time. Do they get paid to go to church? If not, forget it.

  3. I guess if the gullible, I mean religious want a loud mouth atheist at their services calling BS on their imaginary friend. Bring it. The religious of our country are so stupid.

    • DUH! Of course it would. But that nutjob wacko legislator obviously has not encountered the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause! That deficiency is probably not the only information lacking in the warty little knot of shriveled tissue she uses instead of a brain.

  4. Yeah, sure. Let’s get the Jews and the Seventh Day Adventists’ to weigh in on mandatory SUNDAY attendance.

  5. Please…enough saying “if only people went to church….”(of their choice???? ) what if they go out in nature to worship, or don’t have/want to go to church? What if their home is their “church?” Who will be sent to “check up” on them? A relationship with God (or none ) is a person’s personal business. This is just idiocy. And “the good old days” are never completely accurate. There were still sins going on. They just were kept quiet.

  6. The people of Arizona should be ashamed to have someone with no understanding of the US Constitution (or reality) representing them in government.

    • Oh, they understand, they claim. They wear their ignorance like a badge of courage. “Their religion” is the “True Religion” and therefore the Bible and the Constitution say what they want it to say. Like Ted Cruz, talks to God and God tells him what to do. Most people that say God talks to them are in jail for mass murders, or in mental facilities. How do I know? GOD told me.

  7. “the Sabbath (i.e., the worship day) was made for “man” and not “man” for the Sabbath.” She violates Scripture by her push. She wants to re-make man to worship for the Sabbath. Oh, her Christianity, as well as her selective memory, is not just flawed, but has become the concrete walls within which no criticism nor change is allowed. Any contradiction suggests that there are just more mistaken people out there.

  8. I think we tried this already in the 16th and 17th Century mostly. That went very well. Torture, Burning at the Stake, for Heretics, non-“Christians,” Intellectuals, those who missed Mass/Sunday Sermons; Established Churches where Dissenters suffered Penal Laws, and worse, opposing Clergy outlawed, imprisoned, tortured and executed. Maybe the Founding Fathers were on to something when they looked at what came before and came up with the 1st Amendment/ Separation of Church and State. But, then what did they know. Now it’s all good with AZ Rep Sylvia Allen !

  9. So, atheists would be fined EVERY Sunday? How about Jews who worship from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown? Do Muslims get extra credit for worshiping five times a day? What about Christians who worship on Wednesdays as well as Sundays? Is it cumulative? btw, the Puritans left Europe and settled here because of religious persecution….being forced to worship other religions…duh, moronic cow.

  10. No one had to “make” people follow Jesus and want to hear him speak. If preachers worked a little harder at preparing decent sermons, maybe people would go to church voluntarily. It’s not the government’s fault that churches are not well attended; it’s the church’s fault. If people are coming to your church, that’s a sign that you need to improve.
