Clueless Trump Wants To Give Healthcare Workers Protective Masks Made From Underwear

Despite Donald Trump’s constant promises that he’s making sure healthcare workers have the protective equipment they so desperately need as they treat patients with coronavirus, there are reports of shortages of gloves and masks across the country.

On Sunday, Trump proudly announced that one of his top economic advisers, Peter Navarro, had been in contact with the Hanes, and they had agreed to make the needed masks:

“Here’s the beauty of it: If we go out and we want, let’s say, masks, we don’t know who to call on masks. But Hanes, who makes things of cotton — various elements, lots of things; it’s a great company — they called us and they said, We’re going to make millions of masks.”

Surprisingly, according to the New York Times, what Trump said actually turned out to be true:

“Anderson Warlick, the chief executive of the textile company Parkdale Mills, said Mr. Navarro had called him early last week to ask what the company could make. By Saturday, Parkdale Mills joined Hanes, Fruit of the Loom and other companies in announcing a coalition to produce masks.”

There is, however, one major problem with those masks. Namely, they’re not the kind hospitals need:

“The new masks will be made of a three-ply underwear fabric, and do not provide the level of protection given by the N95 masks that health care workers need for intubation and other procedures.”

In other words, while it’s very nice that Hanes and Fruit of the Loom are eager to make masks, that doesn’t exactly solve the problem if those masks can’t be used by the people who most need them. The masks might be great for someone to wear when they go to the grocery store, but for doctors and nurses, they might just as well be made out of flimsy tissue paper.

Donald Trump does not have a solution to the COVID-19 crisis which is taking the lives of Americans by the hundreds. He cannot even get something as simple as masks to the people who are treating those with the disease. He’s a failure as a president, a leader, and a human being. It’s time to send him packing.
