In less than 24 hours, the United States Senate will begin the formal impeachment trial of President Donald John Trump, and despite that fact, we still know very little about what kind of rules and procedures Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will implement for this historic event because he refuses to give many specifics.
For weeks now, a few Senate Republicans have hinted they might be open to the idea of additional witnesses at the trial. And the latest polls show that two-thirds of Americans want to see witness testimony.
But despite that, the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., is already threatening any senator who votes his or her conscience and insists on further witness testimony.
During an appearance on Fox Business, Junior told host Maria Bartiromo:
“If the Republicans, and some of them, let’s call it weaker Republicans, I sort of like the Rand Paul model, make them vote on it. If some of those guys don’t want to hear from the witnesses that we want to hear from but I’d want to know about it, because they don’t deserve to be in office.”
That sounds like a threat, doesn’t it? If any Republican votes for witnesses that might be damaging to the president, they don’t deserve to be in office. In other words, they’ll face primary opposition the next time they run for reelection.
Despite that, Trump Jr. said he was eager to hear from any witnesses that might help exonerate his father:
“If we’re hearing from those witnesses, I want to sort of hear it, because I realized having watched this thing transpire over the last few years, and the nonsense perpetuate itself, I definitely want to hear from the other side.”
So, no witnesses that the Democrats want to call, but be sure and let the Republicans call Joe and Hunter Biden, because that feeds into President Trump’s ludicrous conspiracy theories.
An innocent person — which is something Donald Trump and his crooked spawn have never been — would welcome witnesses and evidence, knowing that would help prove they did nothing wrong.
