Polls From Key Battleground States Point To The Senate Turning Blue In November

While the race for the White House gets most of the headlines, there’s a major battle going on behind the scenes to turn the U.S. Senate blue in the November election, and recent polling suggests that a Democratic majority is well within reach.

The most vulnerable incumbent Republicans are Sens. Susan Collins (ME) and Martha McSally of Arizona, who are beginning to fade in their races against Democratic challengers. Public Policy Polling (PPP) notes:

“New PPP polls find Sara Gideon leading Susan Collins 47-43 in the Maine Senate race and Mark Kelly leading Martha McSally 47-42 in the Arizona Senate race.”

Two other races are also trending to Democrats, PPP reports:

“Additionally a PPP poll for a private client last week found Cal Cunningham leading Thom Tillis 46-41 in the North Carolina Senate race, and when PPP last polled the Colorado Senate race John Hickenlooper led Cory Gardner 51-38. This makes four Republican held US Senate seats where PPP has found Democratic challengers with at least a 4 point lead.”

If that wasn’t bad enough, there’s also the entry of Montana Governor Steve Bullock in that state’s race for the U.S. Senate. Bullock has high favorability ratings in the The Treasure State and polls suggest that GOP incumbent Senator Steve Daines is vulnerable.

Switching those five seats to Democrats would dramatically shift control of the Senate from Republicans (who currently hold a 53-47 advantage) to Democrats, who would then be in control by a tally of 52-48. And that would be a big boon to a Democratic president, who could work for two years with his party in control of both houses of Congress.

The tide appears to be turning against Donald Trump and his defenders in Congress. We could be on the verge of a dramatic change for the better in Washington, but it depends on all of us getting out on Election Day and making our voices heard in large numbers.

  1. LIke this. I am very hopeful that the Senate will change, but in your analysis you didn’t mention Doug Jones in Alabama. This will be very difficult to keep blue.

  2. There is a decent chance that Kansas will send a Democrat to the Senate for the first time since 1932.

  3. I keep reading Biden is statistically tied with Trump in …Texas! What is Cornyn’s status? I sure wish Beto had stayed to run against him.
