GOP Congressman At Town Hall: ‘Nobody Dies Because They Don’t Have Access To Healthcare’ (VIDEO)

On Thursday, Idaho Republican Congressman Raul Labrador voted to pass the American Health Care Act (AHCA)–also known as Trumpcare. And on Friday evening at a town hall meeting Coeur d’Alene, Labrador found out that many of his constituents are more than a bit upset that he wants to take away their health insurance.

At the town hall, which focused almost exclusively on healthcare, a constituent told Labrador that the AHCA’s massive cuts in Medicaid are telling people they should die. Labrador took exception with that, and replied:

“That line is so indefensible. Nobody dies because they don’t have access to health care.”

Labrador was loudly booed for that ridiculous assertion.

This is the same man who has said at previous town hall meetings:

“I do not believe that health care is a basic right.

“When something is a right … it’s something that must be provided by the government. But I do believe people should have access to health care. … I think we should take care of those people that cannot work, that cannot provide for themselves. I do think we have a responsibility for those people. But if you’re a working person, then we should make it easier and less expensive to you to receive health care.”

And Labrador has long been a vocal opponent of Obamacare. He says those who are less healthy should be forced to pay more for coverage:

“The way insurance is supposed to work is if you’re healthy, you’re going to get one rate; if you’re a little bit less healthy, you’re going to get another rate.”

What the Congressman neglected to mention is that he and his colleagues pay the same rate no matter how healthy or sick they may be, and we help subsidize them with our tax dollars. Also, the Trumpcare bill exempts Congress from the punitive effects of the legislation they want to impose on the rest of us.

Less than 48 hours after they passed the AHCA, Republicans are already learning that constituent anger over their affirmative vote could cost them their political careers. As well it should.
