If the Republican Party was looking for some good news–even a glimmer of hope–in the 2016 election, GOP strategist Steve Schmidt had some very sobering words for them this morning on MSNBC.
Schmidt said on Morning Joe that he could easily see Hillary Clinton getting in excess of 400 electoral votes on November 8 and winning by one of the largest margins in history:
“I think she’s trending over 400.”
A candidate only needs 270 electoral votes to win the White House. And Schmidt had more bad news for the Republicans: The latest polling data also indicates that the Democrats will win control of the Senate and perhaps also take over the House of Representatives:
“If this election was today, I think Republicans are down 25 seats, as of today, with the trend line going in the wrong direction.
“The panic is beginning.”
Could we be on the verge of a long stint in the political wilderness for the GOP? We can sure as hell hope so.
