Just A Reminder: It Was Ivanka Who Insisted Daddy Appoint Mike Flynn

While all of the attention Friday was on former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn as he did the perp walk into a federal courtroom to shouts of “lock him up,” it seems instructive to recall that one of the main reasons Flynn got the job in the first place is because Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, decreed it.

Last fall, as the Trump transition team — then led by Chris Christie –, was meeting, Ivanka barged into the meeting with Flynn and former General Keith Kellogg, telling Christie that Flynn had demonstrated “amazing loyalty to my father.” Ivanka then turned to Flynn and asked him:

“General, what job do you want?”

A person at the meeting later told The New Yorker:

“It was like Princess Ivanka had laid the sword on Flynn’s shoulders and said, ‘Rise and go forth.’”

Not long afterward, Flynn was named to be National Security Adviser. 25 days later, Flynn was forced to leave the administration in disgrace for failing to disclose lobbying work he had done in Turkey. When that happened, Mike Pence had taken charge of the transition, calling into question just how carefully Flynn was vetted.

Ivanka Trump also played a role in the hiring of Anthony Scaramucci, ostensibly to be White House Communications Director though he never formally got the title during his short and tumultuous stay in the West Wing. Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, were also behind the firing of former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was indicted by a federal grand jury in October.

All of this calls into question just how much of a player Ivanka has been all along. Is she also under investigation by Mueller’s team? And is she willing to go to prison in order to protect her father, or will she agree to cooperate with Mueller to save her own skin? All of these questions will be answered in time.
