As Vice President Mike Pence seeks to distance himself as much as humanly possible from the increasingly bad news regarding the Russia investigation, his press secretary was a guest on Fox News and was unable to say definitively that his boss had never met with any Russians during the 2016 race for the White House.
Appearing on America’s Newsroom, Marc Lotter was asked by host Bill Hemmer:
“Clear up a few things for us now. Did the vice president ever meet with representative from Russia?”
Rather than respond directly, Lotter replied by saying:
“The vice president is not focused on the areas where, you know, on this campaign, especially things that happened before he was even on the ticket. As he has said, that when he joined the campaign his entire focus was on talking to the American people, taking the case that President Trump was going to make to the American people.”
Hemmer refused to give up, again asking:
“I understand … Just come back to this question here: If it wasn’t a private citizen from Russia, did he ever meet with representatives from the Russian government during the campaign?”
“That stuff, the special prosecutors and the counsels are all looking at.”
“Just to nail this down so we’re clear: Is that a yes or a no? Did he or did he not, and was it relevant, in fact?”
The press secretary hedged his answer:
“I’m not aware of anything that I have seen.”
Keep in mind that back in January, when the Russia story first began to bloom with questions being asked about disgraced National Security Adviser Mike Flynn, Pence was asked by Face the Nation host John Dickerson if the Trump campaign had any ties at all to Russian officials. To that query, the Vice President responded:
“Well, of course not. And I think to suggest that is to give credence to some of these bizarre rumors that have swirled around the candidacy.”
Oh, you mean the bizarre rumors that have proven to be accurate, Mike?
Before this investigation is over with, don’t be surprised if we learn Mike Pence is up to his eyes in the conspiracy, collusion, and cover-up.
