Republican Senator Now Ensnared In Trump’s Growing Ukraine Conspiracy

As House Democrats prepare to vote open public hearings on the Ukraine scandal this week, one of the senators who may have decide whether or not to remove Donald Trump from office now finds himself caught in the center of the larger conspiracy and could wind up being destroyed by his connection to the matter.

According to the Washington Post, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) met with a former Ukrainian diplomat as recently as July, around the same time as the infamous phone call Trump made to Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine:

“Sen. Ron Johnson met in July with a former Ukrainian diplomat who has circulated unproven claims that Ukrainian officials assisted Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, a previously unreported contact that underscores the GOP senator’s involvement in the unfolding narrative that triggered the impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

“In an interview this past week, Andrii Telizhenko said he met with Johnson (Wis.) for at least 30 minutes on Capitol Hill and with Senate staff for five additional hours. He said discussions focused in part on ‘the DNC issue’ — a reference to his unsubstantiated claim that the Democratic National Committee worked with the Ukrainian government in 2016 to gather incriminating information about then-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Telizhenko said he could not recall the date of the meeting, but a review of his Facebook page revealed a photo of him and Johnson posted on July 11.”

Johnson has been a strong Trump ally and defender, even going to far as to co-sponsor a Senate resolution with Lindsey Graham (R-SC) stating opposition to the impeachment inquiry. Which raises a larger issue: Why is Johnson so eager to excuse Trump’s high crimes and misdemeanors when he’s supposed to be impartial when the president’s impeachment is before the upper chamber? And why did the senator choose to get involved with a conspiracy theorist from Ukraine?

If Johnson has any shame, he will announce that he plans to recuse himself from taking part in Trump’s impeachment. Otherwise, he cannot be considered a impartial juror in the process. He also needs to be brought before the Senate Ethics Committee to answer for his actions.

It’s beginning to look like the Ukraine scandal may wind up destroying Trump and the political party that has been his chief enabler.
