If Donald Trump thought his poll numbers were low a month ago as the death toll from coronavirus in the U.S. continued to escalate (it now stands at 106,546 and rising), his utter fecklessness when it comes to the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis has now convinced even more Americans that the incumbent president has lost complete control of the job he was elected to do, and they’re ready to cast a ballot for anyone but Trump in November.
As Jennifer Rubin notes in a powerful piece she wrote for The Washington Post, Trump is now the “invisible president,” and his fall in the polls is nothing short of historic:
“The magnitude of President Trump’s polling collapse is breathtaking. The Post-ABC News poll in March showed his approval rating nudging into positive territory (48 percent approval vs. 46 percent disapproval); the latest poll released on Sunday shows him back in negative territory (45 percent to 53 percent). His personal favorability is net -13. His rating on handling the coronavirus has gone from a net +6 to a net -7.”
Go back for just a second and reread that paragraph. Trump is now underwater by 13 points in his personal net favorability, which means he’s the least popular incumbent president in over four decades, as CNN polling analyst Harry Enten explained:
“There were more than 40 national public polls taken at least partially in the month of May that asked about the Biden-Trump matchup. Biden led in every single one of them. He’s the first challenger to be ahead of the incumbent in every May poll since Jimmy Carter did so in 1976.”
Granted, the 2020 election will not be held tomorrow or even next month. But with five months before voters go to the polls (either in person or from the comfort of their homes) the American people are letting pollsters know that they simply don’t like Trump. They don’t trust him. And they don’t think he’s the person to lead the country into the future. Once again, quoting Enten:
“Simply put, he remains unpopular. His net approval rating (approval – disapproval) in the ABC News/Washington Post poll was -8 points. That’s very close to the average of polls, which has it at about -10 points. At no point during the past three years has Trump ever had a positive net approval rating.”
Of course, the fact that Trump realizes he may be on the verge of losing in a landslide makes him even more dangerous and more willing to do anything in order to cling to power. Rubin warns that we all have to be on the alert and plan for dark days ahead:
“In sum, Biden could well be heading for a decisive win. However, no one should underestimate Trump. One thing we know for sure: He will have no qualms about making racial divisions deeper and instigating violence. He’s done it before.”
An absolutely evil person will always find new ways to be even more despicable.
These are now the days that concern me!Trump will be inciting more damage and rioting. His cronies will also want to keep him in power for their own packaged deals Dangerous times ahead. Time the democrat party really start doing more about GOP removal, and threats about Impeachment. Time to stop sitting on your rhetoric and promises. Get busy removing trump. This tyranny needs to be stopped he is an incompetent- impotent troubled leader and very totally out of touch with POTUS position. His blaming those amazing mayors and governors that are actually doing more than he has done so far, he is using to hide behind. He uses the podium to call on those uncouth and disturbed angry and miserable misfits that think he has what suits them. Violence and unhappiness due to nothing decent in their thinking either that produces well being to all humanity….Biden has a big challenge facing him and he also needs to look at the brutality that has been happening forever… Fast changes are required… so we can address our Planet before it too is too late…..Save our Brothers and Sisters from the filth that has been served up ashamed to be white and I love my rainbow nations.
