Yesterday, Donald Trump made good on his proposed Muslim ban, but the countries he banned travel from are not exactly the places which have historically caused the most damage to the United States as far as terrorist acts are concerned.

The seven countries included in Friday’s executive order–Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen–have been responsible for zero deaths of Americans on United States soil between the years 1975-2015. And that data is from the very conservative Cato Institute.

Not only that, but a report released just this week also reveals that Muslim Americans with family backgrounds in the seven named countries have killed no Americans over the past 15 years. That information comes from the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security.

Most notably, it should also be recalled that none of the hijackers who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks that left over 3,000 Americans dead were from the seven nations Trump has now banned immigration from. Instead, the vast majority of those individuals came to the United States from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Neither of those countries is on the list Trump unveiled Friday.

Charles Kurzman, a professor at the University of North Carolina and author of the Triangle study, said Trump’s ban is a massive overreaction:

“Contrary to alarmist political rhetoric, the appeal of revolutionary violence has remained very limited among Muslim-American. Let’s use this empirical evidence to guide our policy-making and public debates on violent extremism.

“This is a dramatic and misdirected overreaction to a relatively small-scale problem.”

In addition to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, note that Afghanistan is also not on Trump’s list. And yet Afghanistan remains the home base for the Taliban, a terrorist organization which continues to attack American soliders on Middle Eastern soil to this day and was also the safe haven for Osama Bin Laden prior to his fleeing for Pakistan.

Here’s some comparison for perspective: In 2016 , 188 people were killed on U.S. soil in mass shootings not involving Muslim American extremists, the report says. Meanwhile, there have been 230,000 murders in the U.S. since 9/11.

And perhaps most damaging is that Trump’s seven-nation ban gives every terrorist organization in the world plenty of fodder for their recruitment of new radicals. Trump said he would defeat ISIS, but all he’s done is help them gain converts to their bloody cause.
