Buried inside the indictments of 12 Russian intelligence agents that were handed down by a grand jury in last July was a tantalizing little nugget that didn’t get much attention. As Roll Call reported:

“The indictment stated that on Aug. 15, 2016, the conspirators posing as the ‘Guccifer 2.0’ online persona received a request for stolen documents from a congressional candidate.

“The Russian operatives, under the Guccifer 2.0 persona, responded and sent the candidate stolen documents.”

While we don’t know the identity of the candidate referred to in the indictment, it does raise a much larger question that needs to be asked: Are some members of the current Congress a part of the larger Trump-Russia conspiracy? And if so, who are they?

While we cannot know for certain (at least not yet), who may be compromised, here are the most likely suspects:

Devin Nunes (R-CA)

Nunes has been under scrutiny ever since he agreed to travel to the White House late one night to be briefed on supposedly secret information related to the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation of the 2016 election. That bizarre late night visit later became known as Nunes’s “midnight run,” and it wound up leading to Nunes having to partially recuse himself from the Intelligence Committee he was chairman of.

The California Republican continues to make strange statements regarding the Trump-Russia matter. Most recently, he threatened to impeach both FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller.

Jim Jordan (R-OH)

Jordan has long been an eager defender of Trump, despite evidence suggesting that members of the 2016 Trump campaign had numerous contacts with Russian officials and even met with a Russian attorney at Trump Tower in June of 2016 to discuss acquiring “dirt” on Hillary Clinton.

At the moment, Jordan has an underage sex scandal threatening to take him down, but his constant willingness to run interference for the White House certainly places him under suspicion.

Mark Meadows (R-NC)

As the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, Meadows has great power and influence over more than a few right-wing Republicans that he uses to attack anyone who dares to question Trump on any subject. His aggressive tone on the Russia probe suggests that he’s also compromised.

There are likely other members of the GOP who are only too happy to do the bidding of Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin, but these three are clearly the most active at the moment. What exactly do they have to hide, and are they willing to sit down for an interview with Mueller?
