WTF?! GOP Senator: I Lecture Women On Abortion Because It’s A ‘Men’s Issue’

We naturally expect right wing Republicans to say patently ridiculous–not to mention inaccurate–things, but I do believe that Oklahoma GOP Senator James Lankford has now jumped to the head of the class when it comes to stupid, bizarre statements that are both false and incomprehensible when subjected to logic and reason.

During a debate on the Senate floor about whether or not to defund Planned Parenthood, Lankford proclaimed that the “culture has been wrong” to allow abortion.

Which led to this response from California Democrat Barbara Boxer:

“I just don’t like lectures by men about what it’s like. I’m pro-choice and I just have to say, using pregnancy as a political football doesn’t sit well with the people I represent and the people of this country. We have to respect one another. I respect your view entirely. I’m asking you to respect mine. Keep Uncle Sam out of my private life and my children’s and my grandkids’ and your’s. Families will make these decisions with their God, with their doctor.”

Oh, but Lankford insisted he had every right to lecture women on reproductive choice because it’s a “men’s issue.”

The sound you heard after that claim was the chins of millions of women across America hitting the floor. But let’s hear Senator Lankford out on this:

“I’m a dad of two daughters. I had something to do with the birth as well, and was also there. I was there during the sonograms. My wife and I are extremely close. And to be a dad of two daughters, I’m very passionate, not only about my own wife, but about my mom, who’s a cancer survivor — multiple-time cancer survivor — I’m passionate about my daughters having every single opportunity.”

But if you defund Planned Parenthood, Senator, lots of women won’t be able to get the cancer screenings that probably saved your mother’s life. Nor would your daughters, when they are of age, be able to get services from a Planned Parenthood facility.

Which, of course, is the whole plan for the Republicans: Stop women from getting health care services if the provider in any way, shape, or form might have a connection to terminating a pregnancy, which, the last time I checked, was a woman’s Constitutional right according to the Supreme Court. But the right wing only chooses to listen to the Court when they agree with them.

Lankford continued:

“So this is important to us as well. This is not just a women’s issue, this is a men’s issue as well. Because this is a family issue. And the family is extremely important to all of us.”

Ah yes, back to the old saw of family being so important to the Republicans. And yet they have voted on several occasions to cut Food Stamps, which takes food off the tables of needy families across the country. They also love to cozy up to anti-choice zealots who are fond of shooting doctors. What about the families of the assassinated doctors, Senator?

Lankford and his ilk are the ultimate when it comes to hypocrisy, and that is why they are becoming more marginalized with each and every national election.

  1. Is it just me, but doesn’t he look like the result of some serious inbreeding? Looks like ‘kissing Cousins’ was a reality for his parents!

  2. Yeah, but you didn’t have to carry and give birth. Abortion is a woman’s right and I hope to #OverturnTheHydeAmendment so all women have equal access to a safe and free abortion should they not wish to gestate a parasite. Since we pay to support unplanned and unwanted pregnancies, abortion should be provided for those who don’t want them.
