In the 24 hours or since a federal judge declared Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis in contempt for her refusal to issue same-sex marriage licenses, we’ve heard a great deal of hyperbolic and ridiculous language from the far right and Republicans seeking the 2016 GOP nomination.
Mike Huckabee, proving yet again why he will never ever be President, declared:
“Kim Davis in federal custody removes all doubts about the criminalization of Christianity in this country. We must defend religious liberty!”
And Ted Cruz (aka Teddy Boy) issued a written statement which leaves no doubt that he neglected to get his rabies vaccination:
“Today, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny. Today, for the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith. This is wrong. This is not America. I stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally. I stand with every American that the Obama Administration is trying to force to choose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court opinion.”
Judicial tyranny? I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
But by far the most over-the-top response I’ve seen so far comes from radio and television evangelist Joshua Feuerstein. Check out what this idiot posted on his Facebook page:
“CHRISTIAN HOLOCAUST HAS BEGUN!!! I’m calling for Americans to INVADE ROWAN COUNTY and PROTEST!!! Christian lady ARRESTED for not endorsing GAY MARRIAGE!”
Christian holocaust? Could you maybe dishonor the memories of the 6 million Jews who were exterminated by the Nazis a little more, Mr. Feuerstein?
Here’s what I want to ask of these nimrods who claim Kim Davis is being persecuted for being a Christian: Let’s say there’s a sheriff in a town who considers himself to be a Christian. Suddenly there’s a spate of murders of young children in the town. What if this sheriff refused to investigate the cases or arrest anyone because he claimed to be adhering to this verse of Scripture:
“Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Matthew 7:1-2)
Do you suppose Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, et al would come to the defense of this sheriff as children were being killed? Don’t they claim to love all children, even those not yet born? And yet, what of this man’s religious right to say that he will not stand in judgement of another? Therein lies the slippery slope upon which the far right falls into the pit of their own fevered conception.
So as you watch this video of Joshua Feuerstein, keep in mind that he, like so many so-called Christians, is nothing but a hypocrite trying to make a buck or secure a vote. And that, in my mind, is among the worst of all sins.
