While Donald Trump continues to rail against the investigation being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, it now appears that prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) may present an even greater threat to the president and members of his family, Politico reports:
“Manhattan-based federal prosecutors can challenge Trump in ways Mueller can’t. They have jurisdiction over the president’s political operation and businesses — subjects that aren’t protected by executive privilege, a tool Trump is considering invoking to block portions of Mueller’s report.”
The SDNY may even attempt to do what Mueller seems unlikely to: Indict a sitting president:
“Legal circles are… buzzing over whether SDNY might buck DOJ guidance and seek to indict a sitting president.”
Since the Southern District is also looking at the Trump Organization, there could also be legal jeopardy for Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka Trump, especially as it relates to charges such as money laundering and fraud:
“The New York federal prosecutors are far from finished. They’re still seeking interviews with Trump Organization executives, according to a source with knowledge of the probe. Investigators are looking at everything from potential mail and wire fraud to illegal foreign contributions and money laundering.”
Even Chris Christie, who served as a former federal prosecutor, said recently that the SDNY is a much larger threat to Trump and his family:
“This is why I’ve been saying for months that the Southern District of New York investigation presents a much more serious threat to the administration, potentially, than what Bob Mueller is doing.
“Bob Mueller has a task: It’s Russian interference and potential collusion in the 2016 election. Southern District of New York is whatever the heck you want.”
Don’t forget that the New York Attorney General’s office and the New York Revenue Department also have ongoing investigations into Trump, his family, and his company. And House Democrats have begun multiple investigations into the president and his ties to foreign governments, including Russia and Saudi Arabia.
No matter what winds up happening with the Mueller probe, it appears that Trump is in deep shit everywhere he turns. And there’s absolutely nothing he can do to forestall any of it.
