Yesterday, Dr. Ben Carson formally announced he would be seeking the 2016 GOP nomination for President. So it seems like the perfect time to look back at some of the most batshit crazy stuff the good doctor has said over the years. Here are five that will definitely make you stop and ask, WTF?!
1. “Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery”
This is one of my all-time faves, especially in light of the fact that Carson is a doctor. You would think a man of medicine, a man who took the Hippocratic Oath, a healer, would want to see as many people as possible have access to health insurance and quality healthcare. But you would be wrong. Carson also said that Obamacare “is slavery in a way because it is making all of us subservient to the government.” Is it just me, or does saying something this stupid automatically disqualify you from holding public office?
2. (I’m not sure) “there will even be an election in 2016”
Yes, he also said that President Obama was planning to cancel the 2016 election because “there may be so much anarchy going on.” If that’s the case, then why in the hell is the doctor even bothering to announce his candidacy. All I can say to this one is, Duh!
3. “A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight and when they come out, they’re gay”
Really? I don’t think I’d recommend you say that to an ex-con who is covered in prison tats and just looking for someone to cross him. See that dude over there, Dr. Carson? His name is Duke and he’s in the Hell’s Angels. Go tell him you know he’s gay ’cause he was once incarcerated. No, go ahead.
4. “We live in a Gestapo age”
Carson once said the United States is “very much like Nazi Germany.” If that was the case, do you think he’d be allowed to say that? If America was like Nazi Germany, the minute those words left his mouth, he would be taken into custody, tortured, and summarily executed. I’ve said it before and will say it again: When you pull the Nazi card, you’ve just lost the debate. End of story.
5. Obama may be “guilty of treason”
An old favorite with those on the far right who have no other logical reasons to oppose the President. Just this year, when President Obama took his executive action on immigration, Carson said: “If things are done that are contrary to the security of this country, whoever does them is guilty of treason.” And whoever truly thinks that is guilty of a lack of comprehension when it comes to the U.S. Constitution.
I’m sure Ben Carson will say lots of other WTF?! things as he runs for the Republican nomination, so it’s a safe bet that this won’t be the only one of these articles you’ll be seeing. Dr. Carson is a walking, talking crazy quote machine.
