The latest polling numbers out of Maricopa County, Arizona, are great news for those who have been trying to oust the racist asshat of a sheriff we know by the moniker Sheriff Joe.
An Arizona Republic/Morrison/Cronkite News poll just released shows Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Democratic challenger, Paul Penzone, leading the incumbent Arpaio-who proudly brags about being the toughest sheriff in America–by a whopping 15 points.
The poll also indicates that Penzone has seen his lead grown from 10 points to 15 in the course of only 48 hours. Penzone leads 46 to 31 percent in the most recent data released.
Just two months ago, in August, a similar poll found that 57.3 percent of registered voters in Maricopa had an unfavorable or very unfavorable opinion of Arpaio.
Arpaio has been in legal trouble for years now, and most recently was charged with contempt of court by a federal judge for refusing to obey court instructions regarding how he targets and racially profiles Hispanics in Maricopa County.
First elected in 1992, Arpaio has never lost an election. But the last time he ran, in 2012, he was hard-pressed to reach 50 percent of the vote, winning only narrowly.
A look inside the Cronkite poll also indicates that a large majority of voters do not agree with Arpaio’s stated position that every undocumented resident of Arizona should be deported. 68 percent of those surveyed said they disagreed with such a policy,
So it now appears that not only is Arizona in play for the presidential election, but could also wind up being the end of the line for Sheriff Joe. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving racist jerkweed.
