GOP Senator Wants To Ban Food Stamp Recipients From Owning Cars, Even If They Have A Job!

Just when you thought Republicans could not possibly be more cold-hearted, vindictive, and downright evil, along comes a guy like Arthur Orr and you realize that some members of the GOP not only want to inhabit the bottom of the barrel, they would just as soon lift the barrel and find the scum residing under it to emulate.

Orr is a State Senator in Alabama, that bastion of hatred, racial injustice, and violence which is now determined to take cars away from those who dare to collect food stamp benefits in his state.

A bill introduced by Orr in the Alabama legislature would cut the time frame for receiving food assistance from five years to three. It also adds an entirely new level of bureaucracy, including a requirement that aid recipients sign a contract vowing to strictly adhere to the program’s rules or face jail time. As if that isn’t more than enough, it would also automatically disqualify anyone from receiving food stamps or financial assistance for families with children if the recipients happen to own a car.

Orr attempted to defend his heartless piece of legislation by saying:

“We want to get people working back in the workforce and not hanging out for public benefits because they can.”

What Senator Orr neglected to mention is that some 77 percent of all food stamp recipients are children, the vast majority of whom have parents working jobs which do not pay enough to lift them above the federal poverty line.

Democratic Senator Rodger Smitherman said he will do anything it takes to make sure Orr’s bill fails:

“I’m going to do whatever I can to stop this. I am not going to let you do this to these people. I am not going to let people starve.”

Parts of Alabama currently have unemployment rates as high as 20 percent, but rather than providing job training or attempting to attract new businesses to these areas, Orr and his GOP colleagues would prefer to make it harder for poor people to feed their families. How very Republican of him!

Carol Gundlach, a policy analyst with Alabama Arise, said Senator Orr is mistaken to think that people remain on food stamps for long periods voluntarily:

“People just aren’t dependent. That’s a myth. People go on and off these programs all the time, particularly food stamps.”

Here are some other myths about SNAP benefits:

  1. This is the reasoning behind the Republican Brain…. that the average Republican is convinced that the lowest White person is still better than the best Black person… this is not new… Lyndon Johnson said this over 50 years ago…. You’ve got a large segment of White Americans who didn’t either get a good enough education to stay employed through economic downturns, or simply has refused to do the things you need to do to keep up in this society, and these slackers are turning to Donald Trump because they think they can ‘catch up’ after mass deportations, and a wall being built… Bad news.. not keeping up in life can’t be cured by electing a 800lb Gorilla to tear your neighbor’s nice house down……Denying the working poor the ability to own a car? What level of stupidity will they explore next?

  2. Just another white, middle-aged Republican diaper stain who wants to feel superior to ANYONE, so he doesn’t have to accept the ‘dumpster fire failure’ of his OWN life!
Guess What? White folks are not the only taxpayers in this Country… YOU don’t own this Nation, and before you finally DIE in a hospital paid for with taxpayer money, you’re going to understands this…… I sure hope you don’t have kids………

  3. Kind of reminds me of the senator that pushed through a bill to have welfare recipients drug tested. They hit like 4 people in 17,000 at a cost of over $200,000. Then he got busted this week for cocaine.

  4. If you want people to get off food stamps, then create decent jobs that pay enough so they can get off food stamps. Good paying jobs = problem solved.

  5. I really want any of these assholes to LIVE on food stamps and welfare, and then talk. Just stop the crap !!!!

  7. Hello, Mr. McFly. We we very happy to receive your request for food assistance today. We’re going to make sure that you can’t get the assistance you need in order to have a chance to be self-sufficient, because you have a car. If this is a problem for you, then I recommend that you sell your car and use it to buy food. We’ll reconsider helping you with your dietary needs when you no longer own a car. If this will cause you any difficulty in obtaining a job, or making it to work every day, then you need to make sure that you have a job, work harder, and someday you can afford that car which you need to have access to in order to get to work then. We’re not here to support slackers like you, McFly. We’re here to teach you to be self-sufficient.

    Signed, Mr. Strickland
Representative for Senator Arthur Orr (R), Alabama

    • Small rural communities don’t have mass transit. Small rural communities also don’t have a whole lot of jobs that pay a decent wage. What are people in these little towns supposed to do, eat dirt?

  8. Additionally, there is virtually no public transport in Alabama. We’re just not setup for it. If you live in the center of the largest cities, there are minimal bus routes. It’s hard to walk anywhere, because again, you just have to walk along a roadside predominately without sideways.

  9. if you have to sell your car before you can get food stamps how do you get to the agency to get the them with out a car? Do they send a cab for you?

  10. I dont know if I can but Monday I may check into if I qualify for FOOD STAMPS,,,yea I want me an E B T card..if I get one ,,I will find one of the UPPER CLASS food outlets around town. Then I will go into it and find me a small jar of CAVIAR ,,fish eggs,,you can get them for $10 to $20 for the low class ones,,THEN maybe I will get me a NICE PORTERHOUSE STEAK,,,,,AND DARE ANYONE to comment on my purchase,,,I have WORKED for over 50 years and paid my TAXES for that card, not some congressman he didnt pay MY TAXES so how can he tell me what to do with them? It would BELONG TO ME and no one else,,and I can do with it as I please,,YES there are CRIMINALS out there who do abuse these cards illegally,, we already have police for them,,,WHAT DOES THAT have to do with me???? NOTHING,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,REPUBLICANS HAVE BEEN DUPING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WITH FOOLISH STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE WHO DO NOT DESERVES TO EAT,,,HOW DUMB DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO BELEIVE THAT KIND OF CRAP????????????
OH AND THE CAVIAR AND THE STEAK,,,? THAT GETS DONATED TO THE NEAREST HOMELESS SHELTER,, , we live in the richest country in the world and the ONLY REASON we even have hungry people is some greedy basterd has been stealing from us all for years,,,

    • There is this mentality that people that have food stamps “only deserve rice and beans” or the cheapest food, and most people on SNAP do try and get the best deal they can. That said, they also are feeding families and buy a lot of pasta and less nutritious items that are more filling. and go farther. SNAP benefits cost the average taxpayer about 32 cents a year, and the working poor pay INTO this system. So I say two things: 1. you buy whatever you want, it’s no matter to me. Not like they’re buying something special all the time, but they need a treat once in a while too. 2. let’s raise that 32 cents a year to a dollar. Imagine the difference that could make.

  11. First point , IF Companies would pay a LIVING WAGE, we wouldn’t need some of these programs ! HE has NO say over the food share program , as several States have found. They tried to get Other restrictions on this program, drug testing etc, and had gotten Sued and Lost. Because food share is a Federal Agricultural Department program, designed to HELP, our Farmers and our Poor. But that’s what they try to do , to divide (and Conquer) the people , make the Poor, Disabled, and Old the Skapegoats !
