We know almost nothing about Donald Trump’s finances. He swears he’s a billionaire but refuses to prove it. He claims to have business dealings across the globe but won’t tell us where exactly he does business.

Most of all, however, Trump refuses to let us see his tax returns. He says he’d love to release them, but he’s being audited. However, a person under audit is not prohibited from revealing their tax returns, the IRS says.

On Wednesday, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-MA) formally requested that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) six years of President Trump’s personal and business tax returns, the New York Times reports:

“The move by Mr. Neal came as other panels controlled by House Democrats were flexing their muscles. The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday morning authorized its chairman to use a subpoena to try to force the Justice Department to give Congress a full copy of the special counsel’s report and all of the underlying evidence used to reach his conclusions on Russian interference in the 2016 election.”

Problem is, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin seems unlikely to give up those tax returns without a prolonged legal fight, and that fight may even wind up before the Supreme Court, which might be years from now.

But it now appears those tax returns are going to be in the hands of Congressional investigators much sooner than Trump ever imagined thanks to Mazars USA, a tax and accounting firm that has done tax work for the president. As Politico first reported Wednesday:

“Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) told reporters that Mazars … has asked the committee for a so-called ‘friendly’ subpoena so that it can formalize the process of complying with the panel’s request.

“’They have told us that they will provide the information pretty much when they have a subpoena,’ Cummings said. ‘And we’ll get them a subpoena.'”

So, in a matter of a few days or weeks, Congressional Democrats are going to have Trump’s tax returns. And there’s not a damn thing he can do about it because Mazars is offering them willingly, only asking for the legal cover of a subpoena.

Donald Trump is going to be taken down by his finances. It’s about to happen very soon. House Democrats are about to have all the evidence they need to prove there’s a criminal in the Oval Office.
