John McCain absolutely hates it when President Obama talks about anything except who we can bomb or invade. And when the President goes as far as to mention climate change, the Arizona Senator becomes apoplectic.
So when he appeared on the CBS Sunday news show “Face the Nation” yesterday, McCain was loaded for bear and wasted no time attacking President Obama for his recent speech at the U.S. Naval Academy where he said climate change poses a serious threat to American national security.
McCain asserted that what we need to focus on as a nation is ISIS:
“We need to have a strategy. There is no strategy. And anybody that says that there is, I would like to hear what it is, because it certainly isn’t apparent now, and right now we are seeing these horrible — reports are now in Palmyra they’re executing people and leaving their bodies in the streets. Meanwhile, the president of the United States is saying that the biggest enemy we have is climate change.”
Small problem with that statement: President Obama never said climate change was the biggest enemy we have. Here’s what he actually said:
“I’m here today to say that climate change constitutes a serious threat to global security. An immediate risk to our national security. And make no mistake, it will impact how our military defends our country. And so we need to act, and we need to act now.”
Even senior military leaders have been saying the same thing for years now. But McCain was far too busy urging the use of American ground troops in Iraq and Syria to face the terrorists of ISIS. Only then will McCain and his fellow GOP hawks be happy with the strategy. And of course, if the President did exactly what they wanted, they’d still stamp their feet and criticize him.
No matter what the problem may be, you can count on Senator McCain to call for military intervention. It’s his standard response to everything.
