According to the Washington Post, as of October 14, President Donald Trump had made 13.435 false or misleading statements over the course of his time in office. His most frequent lie is about immigration, the Post notes:
“About one-fifth of these claims are about immigration, his signature issue — a percentage that has grown since the government shut down over funding for his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. In fact, his most repeated claim — 172 times — is that his border wall is being built. Congress balked at funding the concrete barrier he envisioned, so he has tried to pitch bollard fencing and repairs of existing barriers as ‘a wall.'”
And yet, despite his lies, Trump’s supporters don’t really seem to care. No matter how often Trump gets caught telling a lie (even a really BIG one, like how Mexico would pay for his border wall), they just shrug their shoulders and say something like, All politicians lie.
Now, however, we have some information that gives us new insight into exactly why Trump is so willing to lie to those who think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.
It’s because Trump thinks they’re stupid.
Elizabeth Spiers is the former managing editor for the New York Observer, a newspaper owned by Trump’s son-in-law and top adviser, Jared Kushner. And when a right-wing blogger objected to her calling the president a liar, she responded with one hell of a posting on social media:
They’re stupid and they’ll buy it. That’s what Donald Trump thinks about the members of his political party; the same party that is always so eager to defend him no matter what. Meet with Russians? No problem! The GOP will help you cover it up. Obstruct justice? That’s OK! We won’t investigate.
What makes Trump’s utter disdain for those who gladly pledge their allegiance to this con man so galling is that he flat doesn’t care that he’s misleading the very people who help keep him in office. He seems to think he’s above it all and that his lies are fine because he doesn’t have to do what’s right or even what’s legal.
So, for all the Trumpers out there who think Donald Trump gives a diddly damn about you, know that you’re being played, He thinks you’re all morons.
Or, as the old saying goes, “If you’re in a con game and you don’t know who the mark is … you’re the mark.”
