Watching last night’s Republican Presidential debate, one thing became clear after less than an hour: the GOP candidates (and by extension the party) have no ideas, no plans, no real roadmap for the future of America other than attempting to scare the shit out of voters.
Again and again last night, we heard the nine contenders on the so-called “main stage” debate tell Americans that ISIS was coming to kill all of us, rape and pillage, and turn the world back to the 14th century.
Really?! Then tell me, please, why do I sleep just fine at night? I have a 9-year-old daughter. I have a brother who lives not far from Fort Benning, but I don’t sit around clutching a semiautomatic rifle and waiting for bad guys to come crashing through my door. I refuse to live in fear.
But to hear the candidates we saw on CNN, the world is coming apart at the seams. Some suggested that President Obama is doing “nothing” to fight ISIS. 10,000 air strikes and counting is nothing? Special forces troops in numbers we may never know the actual amount of are being deployed. All this is nothing? I suggest the candidates check the dictionary for a more functional definition of the word “nothing.”
Here’s Ben Carson’s take on the whole matter:
“We have to get rid of all this P.C. stuff and people are worried about somebody’s going to say that I’m Islamophobic or what have you. This is craziness. We are at war. That’s why I ask Congress, go ahead and declare the war. We need to be on a war footing. We need to understand that our nation is in grave danger.”
We are on a war footing! What more would Carson and his fellow Republicans like us to do? Reinstate the draft? Sell war bonds? No, they just want an excuse to ramp up military spending to levels that will please the military industrial complex masters they really serve.
At the undercard debate, Mike Huckabee said this bit of idiocy:
“Terrorists win when they make us change everything we do in our daily lives and alter our routines. And they’re doing that, from getting on a plane to going in a building. It is high time that we recognize that we have to take them out, not a little bit, but totally. I want my grandkids to grow up not in fear, but in faith and in freedom.”
If your grandchildren grow up in fear, it will be because you, Mike Huckabee, and your fellow GOP compatriots have decided to poison the very air we breathe in this country with fear, loathing, and hatred of all that are different.
As for me and my family, we will sleep just fine at night. Maybe you should try it after you’re finished trying to profit off the suffering of others.
